Rodney Reed was convicted of murdering a Giddings woman, Stacey Stites, by a Bastrop County jury in May of 1998.
The murder of Stites happened just two years earlier in April of 1996.

BASTROP, Texas — A state senator is joining the growing effort to try and stop the execution of a Bastrop, Texas, man.
Austin Democrat Kirk Watson sent a letter to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Oct. 23, asking for a stay of execution for Rodney Reed.
The Death Penalty Information Center reports that 166 death-row inmates have been exonerated and freed nationally since 1973. More than half were black. Thirteen were in Texas. Courts and prosecutors sometimes make mistakes. Could Rodney Reed be another one?

On Nov. 20, Rodney Reed is to be executed by the state of Texas for a crime we can no longer be confident he committed. Twenty one years ago, he was convicted in the 1996 rape and murder of 19-year old Giddings resident Stacey Stites. Ever since, evidence has mounted that Reed neither raped nor killed her. Now, his defense claims it has new witnesses pointing to the man who did.
